Surprise, Ariz- In one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, your #13 ranked OUAZ Spirit top Arizona Christian 38-14. The team's lone non-conference game puts the Spirit at a perfect 6-0 record nearing the last few weeks of the season.
Senior quarterback, Luke Giron who was battling a stinger in his throwing arm all week had a phenomenal showing. The Houston, Texas native continues to extend plays while under pressure even with several Arizona Christian QB spy's. Giron rushed for 56 yards while absolutely dotting Angel Olivias in the back corner for a stellar 30 yard score. Power back Jaylen MaGee had a career record night. The Senior not only eclipsed 1000 yards on the season but rushed for 200 yards on the night. With 34 carries, Coach Murphy emphasized the running game in this weeks gameplan and it paid dividend. With two touchdowns MaGee is clearly unstoppable in the redzone and continues to be the focal point of the run game. His 200-yard game tonight earned him 6th on the list in OUAZ single game rushing performances. His partners in crime Jashaun Foster and Mason Dionne also provided some great bursts in this timely schemed run game. Junior wideout Matthew Hicks was all over the field in this one. Hicks contributed with nine catches for 90 yards and one score. He was even more dependable on late down conversions where the defense simply had no answer for him.Â
Defensively Coach D once again had the defense as strong as ever. The secondary was stout against the Firestorm passing attack that only registered 102 yards. Pittsburgh native Kenny White led the secondary with six total tackles and was an absolute force. Tyler Ivy who has also been all over the stat sheet constantly this season followed with 6 tackles as well. While Braden Robinson and Labarron Kennedy Jr. tied with 4. Coachella native Fred Massie had a late game interception that sealed the deal in the victory. The linebacker placed perfectly in the zone, read the quarterback's eyes and was in an amazing position to make the pick. On 3rd down the defense held the Firestorm to only two conversions on 8 tries. This truly allowed the offense to absolutely control the time of possession.
With a big Saturday night victory your OUAZ Spirit remain atop the SAC with 3 games left to go. The defense set the tone early, the offense capitalized on key drives, and the time of possession allowed this team to succeed. Following a bye, your OUAZ Sprit return to Spirit Field to take on Arkansas Baptist on Saturday November 1st at 7pm.
