Spirit Get Second Shutout of Season in Big Home Victory

Surprise, Ariz- OUAZ football rolls into Week 7 with their 7th straight win and a shutout, against Arkansas Baptist College 48-0. Heading back into conference play, the team changed their strategy by throwing the football more often, and this adjustment paid dividends. The Spirit continued their perfect season at 7-0 and 6-0 in the SAC, making them one of the few undefeated teams in all of college football.

Luke Giron continued his stellar performance even in a game that he did not completely finish. The senior all-conference quarterback converted in all facets of the passing game. Giron, who appeared to be in perfect health, executed several passes down the field and also darted some quick passes on a tight rope. He finished with 3 passing touchdowns on 263 yards in only 3 quarters play. One of his best passes of the night came courtesy of standout Senior wideout Matthew Hicks on a slant route. Hicks gained an extra step on a cornerback who was tightly covering him, but Giron stepped up in the pocket and delivered a gorgeous missile into Hicks' hands. Hicks then broke free for a score. He then followed that up with a hitch route catch, during which he juked two defenders out of their shoes to score his second touchdown of the game. Sophomore Marques Reese, who was due for a huge game had one of the most electrifying touchdowns all year. Reese, on the first play of the drive early in the second quarter housed a post route over the middle. The best part of the play came after the catch as Reese came to a complete halt causing the corner tallying him and the safety to collide. His speed allowed him to pull away from defenders, resulting in a total of 3 catches for 181 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown. With the duo of Mason Dionne and Jaylen MaGee, getting an off night, Jordan Johnson carried most of the plays in the backfield. The Dallas native ran all over Arkansas Baptist, achieving 7 carries for 57 yards and scoring a 24- yard touchdown.

Even with many defensive starters coming out early in this game, the defense held strong in route to their second shutout of the season. In college football, shutouts are tough to come by once a season, and the Coach D-led defense has completed them twice in the last three games. The focal point continues to be the secondary, as even with a switch at quarterback, the team only allowed 126 passing yards. Late in the game, the team unleashed its strongest pass rush, racking up the highest sack total of the season with 8. Clayshun Davis led all defenders with 6 tackles, while Justice Sosnicki, Sione Latu, Alex Cordova, and Charles Jackson each recorded 5 tackles. Kenny White, who is a prototypical hard hitting safety with his size and speed, showed Coach D he might want to be apart of more blitz packages. White executed one of the biggest sacks of the night, resulting in a 12-yard loss and also totaling four tackles. Every week, we find ourselves discussing this team's performance on 3rd down, and once again, this defense limited Arkansas Baptist to just one conversion out of 17 attempts. The OUAZ front seven dominated up front, holding the opponent to just 56 rushing yards. The defensive line controlled the trenches, while the linebackers filled gaps and tackled with precision. Their discipline and physicality shut down every rushing lane, forcing the offense to become one-dimensional and proving once again why OUAZ's run defense is one of the best in the country.

OUAZ football's shutout victory over Arkansas Baptist was a major win as they enter the home stretch of the 2025. The defense was relentless, pitching a complete shutout, while the offense executed efficiently from start to finish. The Spirit now turn their focus to their final roadtrip of the season as they clash against Texas Wesleyan on November 8th in Fort Worth, Texas, at 1 p.m.
