Spirit Split Doubleheader in Series Finale

Riverside, Calif.- The Spirit split the doubleheader against La Sierra with a 4-0 victory and a 4-3 loss. The Split puts the Spirit at 3-1 on the year.

In the first game of today's doubleheader against La Sierra, OUAZ picked up their third straight win by a score of 4-0. The pitching was the highlight in the Spirit's shutout bid which also included a combined no-hitter. Starting pitcher Leila Elias took the mound to get things going for OUAZ and tossed three shutout frames. In Elias's three innings she only allowed two walks while striking out one and allowing zero hits. The ladder four innings were thrown in relief by Alexis Ayersman who nailed the door shut on the no-hitter and sealed the win for OUAZ. Ayersman struck out five hitters in her 4 shutout innings while only walking 1. The Spirit's pitching efforts continue to shine on all fronts.

In the batters box OUAZ got the job done tallying only 3 hits but 5 walks while finding a way to manufacture runs. First baseman Savannah Sutton had a great day at the plate and got the scoring started in the first with an RBI double to center field, scoring Isabella Rodriguez. The Spirit cashed in on mistakes made by La Sierra in the second inning, scoring on a mishandled double play ball that turned into an unearned run, improving OUAZ's lead to 2-0. The Spirit tacked on another two runs in the sixth to cement their lead at 4-0 where it would remain. This came in the form of an Alexis Jimenez sacrifice fly and a clutch insurance run provided by Nayeli Inzunza. OUAZ defense was perfect today with zero errors to back up their phenomenal pitching performance. On the basepaths, the OUAZ offense stole five bags in another winning effort.

The second game of today's doubleheader ended in the first loss of the Spirit's season. La Sierra takes down OUAZ by a score of 4-3. The Spirit now sit at a record of 3-1 and still take the series over La Sierra in a mostly dominant fashion.

Dayzee Wong recorded a multi-hit effort for OUAZ alongside Alana Gutierrez's 3-run homerun to headline the offensive side of the ball for the Spirit. On the pitching side of things, both Alexis Ayersman and Stephanie Cortazar threw 3 innings allowing 2 earned runs each. Dobbs shined for La Sierra, going 5.2 innings of shutout relief to net La Sierra their first win.

The Spirit now sit at a record of 3-1 and look to continue their great start heading into their next games on February 4th, against Carroll (Mont.) University (Time and location TBD).
