Spirit Sweep Doubleheader Against Bethesda to Start Season 3-0

Surprise, Ariz.- The Spirit had a great day at the ballpark, as they swept the doubleheader against Bethesda. The two wins put the Spirit at 3-0 on the season, and set themselves up for a potential four-game sweep tomorrow.

In game one, OUAZ shut out Bethesda this Friday by a score of 9-0. The game's efforts were headlined on the mound with an impressive start from pitcher Hayden Schooler, who picked up his first win of the season. Schooler tossed four shutout frames while striking out five and only walking three. Sam Lachot came on in relief and earned a five inning save, completing the back end of today's shutout. Lachot struck out two over his five shutout frames while not allowing a single walk. The starter for Bethesda, Ramirez, was also impressive, tossing a quality start only allowing two earned runs over his six innings of work. The Spirit's pitching staff is yet to allow an earned run through the first two games of the season and looks to continue their good work heading into the second game of today's double header.

On the hitting side of things the Spirit put in another day of good work at the plate, slashing 10 hits combined and also walking four times. Third baseman Owen Prendergast got the scoring started in the first inning with an RBI double that scored Logan Meyer and Joey Winters. Fast forward to the seventh inning and first baseman Joey Winters hits a two run blast that scores Dante Leach to lengthen the lead. This was the Spirit's first homerun of the season as they continue their great work on offense. The eighth inning included RBI singles from second baseman Christian Powell, center fielder Matthew Carter, and left fielder Nicholas Lustig. Joey Winters and Owen Prendergast once again tallied multiple hits and the Spirit were running wild on the bases stealing a combined five bases (Nicholas Lustig (2), Dante Leach (2), Owen Prendergast (1)). On the defensive side of the ball OUAZ turned two double plays to help out their pitching staff and only made one error.

Game two ended in yet another victory for the Spirit as they took home a tight 4-3 win over Bethesda and now hold a record of 3-0. Starting pitcher Jackson Brenna had a rocky start but gutted through 2.2 innings of work having the last out in the third picked up by Eddie Torres. Bo Garza took over in the fourth for OUAZ and threw three shutout frames to hold the score where it was and allow the offense time to gather and reset. After being down 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning, OUAZ put up a 3-spot to take the lead. Christian Powell ignited the scoring in the third with a sacrifice fly and it was continued by a game-tying two RBI double by the red hot Joey Winters. The OUAZ offense impressively did not record a single strikeout as a collective. The Spirit would later take hold of the lead on a double steal where Mason Whitehead stole home. After going up 4-3 in the third inning, OUAZ pitching shut the door the rest of the game. Nate Naccarato picked up his first save of the year, locking down the third consecutive win for the Spirit.

OUAZ will look to continue their winning ways as they head into the final game of the series with Bethesda tomorrow at 11 AM on Rangers Field 3.
