GLENDALE, ARIZ. – The OUAZ baseball team played in two wildly different games against Arizona Christian on Saturday, but ended both with the same result. The Spirit won both games of the doubleheader over the Firestorm, taking the series from its crosstown rival in dramatic fashion.
Game 1: OUAZ 20, Arizona Christian 9
Just like on Friday, OUAZ fell behind by multiple runs early to the Firestorm. The Spirit responded with more than enough after getting into a 3-0 hole in the second inning, scoring seven unanswered before blowing the game open with nine runs in the top of the sixth.
After a leadoff pop out to start the sixth, nine consecutive Spirit players reached, and ACU used three different pitchers in that stretch. Trey Trimble and Joey Winters each had a two-RBI single, Matthew Carter drove in a run, and OUAZ took advantage of four Firestorm errors in the inning to run wild on the bases.
Overall, the Spirit finished with 22 hits in the nine innings, and six different batters had at least two. Daniel Durazo was a perfect 4-for-4, driving in four runs, and scoring twice.
Durazo was not the only player to rack up a quartet of hits to start Saturday, as Winters also had four. Winters also drew a walk, plus scored all five times he reached base.
Trimble had three hits in the contest, and drove in three runs. In total, six different OUAZ players drove in at least two runs.
Game 2: OUAZ 4, Arizona Christian 2
The second game of the night was trending in the same direction as the first, as each team scored a run in the first and the second innings. After the quick offensive start, neither team scored again until the seventh and final inning.
Durazo got the scoring started in the first inning, as he singled home carter for the game's first run. Durazo would also drive in the deciding runs in the seventh, bringing home Winters and Carter, putting ACU on its final three outs.
Durazo had three hits to close out Saturday, but he was not the only Spirit player with a multi-hit game. Carter and Nano Perez each had two knocks, and Perez had a double in the first that produced the contest's first tally.
Pitching was great for OUAZ, starting with Trimble's four innings. Trimble allowed just three hits, and struck out four, limiting to ACU to just the two runs. Brayden Marcum and Creighton Sylvain pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit, one walk, and striking out four combined.
ACU had the opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when a one-out double put a Firestorm runner in scoring position. Sylvain took the mound, and go the next two outs on strikeouts to end the threat, setting up OUAZ the opportunity to take the lead, and ultimately the victory, in the next half inning.
The Spirit will now come home for its first GSAC series in Surprise during this season. The three-game series against The Master's starts with a single contest next Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
