PASADENA, CALIF. – The OUAZ women's basketball team played in its second straight game, matching up with NCAA DIII Caltech on Thursday night. It was another contest that came down to the wire, but the Spirit were on the wrong end of a last-second ending this time, falling 66-65.
Up two points with 21 seconds to go, OUAZ just needed one more stop to clinch the victory. Despite a valiant effort, the Spirit fouled on a jumper that went in with two seconds to play, and Caltech sunk the free throw to complete the three-point play and the victory.
For the third consecutive game, the Spirit had an excellent third quarter, and this time it helped erase a six-point halftime deficit. OUAZ outscored Caltech 19-13 in those 10 minutes, forced seven turnovers, blocked a pair of shots, and had the rebound advantage 12-7.
Four of the five Spirit starters finished with double-digit points, led by Elaina Martinez's 12. The guard shot over 50% from the field while pulling in seven rebounds and dishing out a game-leading six assists. Brianna Humphries was the OUAZ leader in rebounds with eight.
One final game remains for the Spirit on this road trip as they play Cal Lutheran on Friday afternoon. Tipoff from Riverside is set for 4 p.m. AZT/3 p.m. PST.
