LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – Trailing by two points with 1:16 to go and just missing out on a chance to tie the game, the OUAZ women's basketball team was going to need an important stop to even have a chance to tie the game. After drawing an offensive foul with 49 seconds to go, the Spirit scored two buckets in two consecutive possessions to take away a 67-65 win from Occidental College on Wednesday night.
Following the offensive foul, Brianna Humphries put a layup through the rim to tie the contest with 37 seconds to go. The Spirit then got another defensive stop with eight seconds to go, and following a timeout, Humphries hit a turnaround game-winner with a second remaining to sink the Tigers and keep her team undefeated.
Humphries had another excellent night, scoring 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds, team highs in both categories. The NCCAA All-American made seven field goals, and also had three blocks on the defensive end.
Angel Addleman and Tiana Sledge also posted double-doubles, with each player pulling in ten rebounds. The Spirit dominated the boards, posting a 59-25 advantage, and nearly pulling in more offensive rebounds (22) than the Tigers had total rebounds.
Addleman finished with 17 points, contributing a pair of assists while also getting three steals on the night. Sledge added 14 points and recorded half of the Spirit's eight steals.
OUAZ will play again on Thursday, taking on Caltech in Pasadena. Tipoff from Braun Gymnasium is set for 8 p.m. AZT/7 p.m. PST.
