For the third time in four weeks OUAZ flew to Texas and continued its recent stretch of dominance by beating Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) 52-10. The Spirit jumped out 45-0 before SAGU could register any points in the final quarter.
The win improves the Spirit to 3-1 overall and 2-1 inside Sooner Athletic Conference action, while SAGU drops to 1-2 and 0-1 in conference play. In the last two wins, OUAZ has outscored its opponents 114-24.
With OUAZ known nationally as an offensive force, the Spirit defense often gets overlooked. However recently, the squad has found its stride stopping opponents quickly and giving the offense more chances to score. On Saturday, SAGU had no points, ran just 36 plays and punted 10 times in the first 52 minutes. Of the 12 total drives for the Lions, only two lasted longer than four plays.
Offensively, the Spirit rushed for 331 total yards and were led by the duo of Stephen Bradford (118 yards and three touchdowns) and Jordan Wilmore (91 yards and one touchdown). It was the second straight 100-yard rushing performance by Bradford.
Through the air, Spirit quarterback Luke Giron may have recorded a season-low 175 yards on 15 completions and two touchdowns, but his efficiency and command of the offense has been impressive. In the last two outings, he has hit 70.8% (34-48) of his passes with four touchdowns.
Next week, OUAZ hosts Wayland Baptist in the first home game since the season opener in August. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and tickets are still available on the Hometown Tickets App.
