Game Recap: Football |

SPIRIT DROP ONE TO THE RAMS

The coaches in the Sooner Athletic Conference had a poll in the pre-season and it showed that Texas Wesleyan and OUAZ would end in a tie for the SAC title.

It might still happen, but the head to head matchup against the Rams (1-0) went to the team from Fort Worth by a score of TWC 36, OUAZ (1-1) 20.

TWC jumped on top first just four and a half minutes into the game, when they scored on a 20-yard pass for the touchdown.  Seconds into the second quarter the Rams finished a 3 play, 80-yard drive with another TD.  They went for the 2-point conversion and failed, 13-0 TWC.

Da'Vicious Wilson (3 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown) caught a 45 yard (in the air) pass and took it to the house for what is listed as a 85-yard pass from Luke Giron to cut the lead to 13-7.  Sadly, that is as close as the Spirit would get all night.

Just about five minutes before halftime TWC would score again to make it 20-7.

Landon Reeves lined up for a chip shot 22-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the first half.  The kick appeared to go just inside the right upright, but the officials standing directly underneath the goalposts disagreed and waved it off.  Sending the game to the locker room with the score 20-7 Texas Wesleyan.

The Rams kicked a field goal at the end of a 63-yard drive to make it 23-7.

Luke Giron, 20-38 for 315 yards a touchdown and three interceptions, ran it in from five yards out to close up shop on a 14-play, 72-yard drive that made it 23-14 after the extra point.

TWC would add 13 more points to take a 36-14 lead just under 10 minutes to go in the game.

Christian Foote would scoop and score from 18-yards out with two minutes to go in the game.  But the 2-point conversion was no good leaving the score at 36-20.

OUAZ will be back in Texas in two weeks, this time in Tyler, Texas to take on Texas College.  The Steers (0-0) played UT Permian Basin (a NCAA Division II school) and lost 96-0.  They continue to play the NCAA portion of their schedule next week when they travel to Central Arkansas.  When they play OUAZ on the 16th, that will be their NAIA opener.

Tickets are going quickly for the Spirit's next home game on Sept. 30 against Wayland Baptist.  Get you tickets now by going to the Hometown Ticket App or by clicking here.
