The OUAZ Spirit golf teams wrapped up the first tournament of the season at the Northwest Iowa National Invitational in Le Mars, Iowa at the Willow Creek Golf Club on Tuesday. The men's team finished in second, just two strokes off the pace. Meanwhile the women's team finished in third.
The course played as a par 71 for the men, while the women had one more stroke to work with. Texas Wesleyan (+7) for the men and Keiser University (-14) for the women won the tournament
The tandem of
Colby Watkins and
Kolby Shackelford finished in a tie for third five strokes off the lead with two others. Another Colby, Unruh from MidAmerica Nazarene, finished tied with J. Ricardo Davila Bone from Texas Wesleyan at five-under 208 for the tournament.
The number two ranked Keiser University ran away with the title defeating Texas Wesleyan by 24 strokes. Of the five players on Keiser's squad that counted, only one finished above par.
Taylor Wilczek (+6 for the tournament, +2 on the day) and
Maddi Shoults (+9 tournament, +2 on the day) paced the Spirit.
As a team, the Spirit played the par five holes well. The men played those holes at a tournament best -14. Watkins was the best player in the field on the long holes carding a -5 . With the women, it was the same story. OUAZ was -3 on the par fives as a team, with Wilczek shooting a -7 on those holes, and she led the tournament with 14 birdies over the course of the 54 holes played.
The teams will now prepare for next weeks OUAZ Fall Invite at Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club.
