CALIFORNIA – In their final set of road doubleheaders, the OUAZ Spirit went 3-1 against Vanguard and Hope International. OUAZ's sole win came in game two against the Vanguard Lions, going on to be swept by Hope International.
GAME ONE: OUAZ 1, Vanguard 3
In the opening game of their final road trip, the Spirit were off to a slow start after giving up two runs in the bottom of the first. Despite answering back with a single run off an error in the second, the Spirit were only able to total three hits on singles from Mashayla Beltran, Kelli Samorano and Savannah Sutton though none were able to close the deal.
Despite tacking on a loss to her 15-9 record, pitcher Alexandra McCutcheon recorded six shutouts in her six inning performance. The graduate student only allowed three runs off of six hits, with only one earned run, walking only one batter.
GAME TWO: OUAZ 5, Vanguard 1
Game two had a significantly different outcome as the Spirit were able to get five on the board, collecting seven overall hits in the process.
OUAZ came out hot with Alex Gill starting things off by stealing home to earn the first run. With Brooklynne Esquibel sealing second just behind Gill, Elysa Moreno stepped up to hit an RBI single, sending the Spirit's second run home.
OUAZ collected their remaining three runs in the third, sixth and seventh off offensive errors. Mashayla Beltran and Savannah Sutton both took opportunities to add to the Spirit's total, scoring off errors by the second and third basemen. The final run of the day sent Beltran in on a wild pitch.
Jazmine Ayala and McCutcheon shared the circle though Ayala was awarded the win allowing only three hits, one walk while striking out one batter and giving up zero runs. On the relief McCutcheon struck out four batters and only gave up two hits.
GAME THREE: OUAZ 0, Hope Intl 1
The Spirit's first game against the Royals proved to be an uneventful one with OUAZ being shutout 1-0. The Spirit's sole hit came courtesy of Savannah Sutton who singled in the top of the fifth.
On the mound for all six innings was McCutcheon who tallied her 10th loss of the season. Despite giving up seven hits and one run, McCutcheon struckout five batters, walking none.
GAME FOUR: OUAZ 1, Hope Intl 4
In the final game of the road weekend the Spirit's fell 4-1 to the Hope Intl. OUAZ managed to get three hits off the Royals and a single run, with an error sending Odalys Garcia-Peret home.
Jazmine Ayala was tacked with the loss after giving up three runs in the first two innings. McCutcheon finished the final four innings, allowing four hits, one run and striking out 3 batters.
