Spirit Sweeps Park-Gilbert in Quick Three Sets

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After a 3-1 run in week one, the OUAZ Spirit (4-1) opened their second week with a No. 2 ranking and an easy sweep over Park-Gilbert (0-3). With final set scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-13 with Spirit picked up their second three set match of the season. 

The mighty OUAZ attack was on display in Faith Arena with the Spirit reigning in 46 kills, hitting .603, their highest percentage of the season by over .150. With kills in the double digits in all three sets, the Spirit were able to hit a high of .810 in the first set contributing to their overall percentage. 

The defense had an equally impressive run, ignited by holding the Buccaneers to a .031 hitting percentage, with just 13 kills off 65 attempts. All three sets saw Park-Gilbert with kill numbers under 10 with the Spirit defense sending their opponent into a negative hitting percentage (-.059) in the third. OUAZ recorded 13 blocks, with five of the six players drawing multiple, and 27 digs, not allowing their opponents a single block on the night. 

Senior Quaid King and junior Emery Outin could not be stopped, making a combined 18 kills off 24 attempts (.667), both drawing the most kills of the night and the second highest hitting percentages. 

Graduate Student Blake Music was perfect on the night going 7-for-7 in kills, earning one assist and drawing three solo blocks. Alongside him with a perfect hitting record was Tyler Gardenhire who went 3-for-3 in kills and recorded 21 assists.

Kona Caruthers, Chase Marcy, Michail Kagialis, and Gardenhire led the way for the spirit defense recording a combined nine of the 13 team blocks and a combined seven digs. 

The OUAZ Spirit will be back in Faith Arena on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6:00 p.m. MT to take on Menlo.
