Surprise, Ariz. – OUAZ softball swept their doubleheader over Benedictine Mesa Thursday afternoon to improve to 11-5 on the year. They won on a run-rule in the first game by the score of 11-3 and won the second game 9-5.
Game One
Ally McCutcheon was tabbed as the Spirit's game one starter and had a quality game in the circle. She allowed three runs, seven hits, and struck out five on the way to earning her sixth win of the year.
The girls came out swinging, putting up seven runs in the first three innings. Charlene Deanda set the tone, as she led off the bottom of the first with homerun over center field.
Mashayla Beltran knocked in three of the seven runs batted in the first game, two of them coming on a double over the left fielder's head to bring around
Elysa Moreno and
Elise Berges.
Elysa Moreno had a productive day from the eight hole in the lineup, tallying three base hits and a run.
Game Two
Sadie Levandowski tossed four innings for OUAZ in the second game and had just one earned run on four hits but was unable to factor into the decision.
Jazmine Ayala relieved Levandowski in the fifth, and would go on to finish the game, earning the win.
Both lineups struggled to score until the fourth inning, when the RedHawks broke the dry spell with a two-RBI single. The Spirit responded right away, putting up five runs in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to four RBI singles and an RBI-double from
Lauren Russell. Russell logged her other RBI of the game in the fifth to put OUAZ up 6-5, in what eventually would be the game-winning hit.
Charlene Deanda hit her second homerun of the day in the sixth inning, on a moonshot over the left-field fence to extend the Spirit lead to four, the final run scored in the night cap.
OUAZ Softball will be back in action tomorrow when they play another doubleheader against Park-Gilbert. Live stats and live stream will be available.
