In a women's soccer match that determined the Golden State Athletic Conference regular season title race, the #23 OUAZ Spirit secured the banner with a decisive 3-0 win over Vanguard University at Spirit Field.
The match featured goals by Karissa Frerichs, Jocelyn Smith, and Anabella Barra, with Barr's goal coming on a penalty kick.
Akela Patterson turned in her sixth clean sheet of the season, her ninth in her career at OUAZ.
A couple of historical items happened in the match. First, the victory gives the Spirit (12-2-1, 5-1-1 GSAC) the all-time series lead at 3 to 2. It also ties for the largest margin of victory by either side (Vanguard won the first-ever meeting 4-1 in Costa Mesa, California, in 2018).
The win secured a tie for the regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming GSAC Tournament by way of tie-breakers. The opening round will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at campus sites, but with the top seed, the Spirit will get a bye straight into the semi-finals. The semi-finals and finals will be held at Arizona Christian University on Nov. 9 and 11.
