OUAZ Opens New Year with Loss at No. 14 Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Playing its first game since December 17, the OUAZ women's basketball team fell to 14th-ranked Vanguard 86-49 on Thursday night in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

The season's trend of slow starts continued as Vanguard (10-3, 4-2 GSAC) used a 24-9 first quarter to lead OUAZ (5-9, 1-5) after 10 minutes. That was sparked by a 19-5 run that carried into the second quarter, and the Lions maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the evening.

The Spirit shot 43.1 percent with 11 offensive rebounds. They were hurt by 23 turnovers that resulted in 31 points for the home side. Vanguard also held a 49-30 edge in total boards with 28 offensive rebounds for 20 points.

Tiana Sledge scored 13 points on 6 of 13 shooting to lead the Spirit. She also had a team-best three steals. Tatiana Gary added 12 points and seven rebounds.

OUAZ closes its trip on Saturday when they play Life Pacific at 1 p.m. AZT in San Dimas, Calif.
