Simmons Scores 16 in Saturday’s Home Loss

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The recent struggles of the OUAZ women's basketball team continued on Saturday as the Spirit fell to Menlo 77-49 in Golden State Athletic Conference action at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (5-12, 1-8 GSAC) never led in dropping a seventh straight contest. Menlo (12-6, 6-3) used a 10-2 run early in the first quarter and never looked back. The visitors held the Spirit to 33.3 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers, converting them into 27 points.

Melissa Simmons scored a season-high 16 points off the bench for the Spirit. She tied the team's season-best with four makes from beyond the arc on seven attempts.

Tiana Sledge added nine points and six rebounds, with Landyn Lovelady scoring eight.

OUAZ finished with a 40-38 rebounding advantage, scoring 14 points from 16 offensive rebounds.

Kiara Brown led the Oaks with 15 points and six rebounds.

The Spirit will play another two home games next week, starting on Thursday when they welcome No. 5 Westmont to Surprise.
