No. 10 Spirit Deliver Record Performance in Season Opener

BATESVILLE, Ark. – There might have been 15 new starters for No. 10 OUAZ on Saturday at Lyon, but it would have been hard to tell as the Spirit shattered the program's record book in a 70-0 win at Pioneer Stadium.

For starters, OUAZ (1-0, 1-0 SAC) scored 70 points in a game for the sixth time in program history. They did so with program records of 737 yards of total offense, 372 rushing yards, and 40 first downs. They also posted the first shutout in program history and held Lyon (1-1, 0-1) to 144 total yards and eight first downs – the fewest ever allowed by a Spirit defense – in setting the record for the largest margin of victory.

It wasn't the best start on Saturday as the Spirit fumbled away the ball on the game's first play. However, two plays later, an interception from Eric Holman gave the offense the ball back and started the rout.

OUAZ scored touchdowns on its next four offensive possessions to lead 22-0 after the first quarter. The lead reached 36-0 by halftime despite two interceptions in the red zone. The Spirit scored on all five of its second-half possessions, excluding the final drive when they kneeled to end the game. This was the first game in program history without a Spirit punt.

In his return to action for the first time since the 2019 season, Kristopher Ewens ran for 108 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Ewens has run for 100-plus yards in the past six games he has played.

Tyrell Sturges-Cofer lit up the scoreboard with four touchdowns on eight carries and 86 yards rushing. The four touchdowns tied the program's single-game record, and by adding a pair of two-point conversions, he scored a new record 28 points.

Carter Freedland and Isaiah Randalle split time at quarterback, with Freedland completing 19 of 23 passes for 224 yards and two scored. Randalle was 13 of 21 for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

The QB duo completed passes to 14 different receivers, with seven making multiple grabs. Donovahn Jones snagged five balls for 93 yards and two touchdowns. James Duronslet posted a 57-yard scoring catch for his only reception.

The Spirit defense forced seven three-and-outs with only two Scot drives going for more than 20 yards. Lyon punted 10 times overall with two turnovers, a missed field goal, and a turnover on downs. They averaged only 2.4 yards per play and didn't complete a pass until the third quarter.

OUAZ recorded five sacks and 15 tackles-for-loss. Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the defense with seven tackles, and David Sow had 2.5 TFLs and a sack. Seth Ham recorded both of his tackles in the backfield, and Elias Guerrero lll forced a fumble with a sack.

Next up for the Spirit is the home opener on September 10 against Southwestern Assemblies of God University. That game kicks at 7 p.m. with tickets available at OUAZSpirit.com/tickets.
