Spirit Secure Draw with No. 12 Westmont

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team earned a 3-3 draw with No. 12 Westmont in a thrilling game at Spirit Field to open GSAC play on Thursday evening. Both teams overcame deficits in the contest before finishing level.

OUAZ (6-2-1, 0-0-1 GSAC) entered the game having dropped all four meetings with Westmont (5-0-3, 0-0-1) and being outscored 15-0 in those contests. However, the Spirit scored first on Thursday when Saipress Jones finished on a breakaway in the 12th minute after the Warrior's defense misplayed a ball in the midfield.

Westmont drew even just over two minutes later when Amelia Villa scored. The Warriors took a 2-1 lead into halftime after Grace Wilhelm scored on an open net following some confusion from the Spirit defense.

Paige Murray-Hernandez pulled the Spirit even 18 seconds into the second half when she slowly rolled a shot into the goal after the rebound of her saved initial shot came right back to her. The second goal of the night from Jones gave the Spirit a 3-2 lead in the 55th minute.

Ande Siegel found the equalizer for Westmont in the 67th minute on a brilliant free kick from 35 yards out that snuck into the upper corner of the goal.

Westmont finished the game with a 13-8 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. OUAZ put six of their chances on goal and narrowly missed the winner in the 79th minute when a header from Myah Newton was kept out of goal by a Warriors defender on a corner kick.

Jones led the Spirit with three shots, with Murray-Hernandez and Cassidi Calzaretta taking two apiece. Akela Patterson earned the tie in goal with two saves. Chloe Gutierrez made three saves in the final 15:41 after replacing Patterson.

OUAZ will now get set to host The Master's on Saturday at 10 a.m.
