Second Half Strikes Push Spirit Streak to Five

MESA, Ariz. – A lighting storm may have delayed the start of the game, but the OUAZ women's soccer team would not be denied its fifth straight win after a 2-0 result over Benedictine Mesa on Friday night at Eagles Park.

It did take into the second half for OUAZ (6-1) to finally break through and take a 1-0 lead when Saipress Jones scored on a corner kick played in by McKenna Payne in the 56th minute. Jones's fifth goal of the season is the 35th of her career.

In the 62nd minute, the lead reached 2-0 as Haley Howard tallied her third goal of the season after being setup by Paige Murray-Hernandez.

The Spirit attempted 13 shots and got 11 on goal in the win. They limited Benedictine Mesa (1-1) to just five shots while adding a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Chloe Gutierrez made five saves in goal to record her sixth career shutout.

OUAZ will go for a program-record-tying sixth straight win when they host Antelope Valley on Wednesday morning at Spirit Field.
