OUAZ Opens Invite with 3-1 Win over Pioneers

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The opening match of the OUAZ Invitational saw No. 17 OUAZ defeat Wayland Baptist 3-1 on Thursday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (2-0) used a 59-37 edge in kills and .240 hitting to secure the 25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 29-27 victory. The Spirit hit above .300 in the first and third sets and posted at least 13 kills in three of the four sets.

Wayland Baptist (0-1) was held to .125 hitting for the match, and the Pioneers hit negative-.057 in the third set. OUAZ helped slow the attack with 71 digs and seven blocks. The Spirit also had 11 service aces.

Livia De Pra led three Spirit players in double figures with 14 kills on .278 hitting. She also posted 12 digs and two service aces. Payton Treadwell and Rylie Henige added 11 kills apiece, while Shea Marovich had nine kills on .571 hitting.

Evonne Rodriguez tallied 14 digs to lead the Spirit. Logan Kuehn had her first double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs. Gloria Moye finished with four blocks.

OUAZ canceled its afternoon match on Friday, so they will return to action at 8 p.m. on Friday against Montana State-Northern.
