Spirit Use Second Half Outburst to Defeat Pioneers

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team picked up a 5-0 win over Wayland Baptist in the home opener on Thursday evening at Spirit Field.

OUAZ (3-1) took the lead in the 11th minute when Haley Howard scored her first goal of the season. Cassidi Calzaretta and Haley Chitwood picked up assists in the goal.

The lead remained 1-0 through halftime, but quickly the Spirit turned up the pressure. Chitwood converted her first goal of the season in the 47th minute, and then Saipress Jones made it 3-0 just 67 seconds later.

Andrea Ibarra made it 4-0 when she scored in the 59th minute, and then Makayla Swain closed the day with her first goal in the 90th minute.

The Spirit finished with a 26-8 edge in total shots, and they put 15 of those shots on frame. They also took 10 corner kicks.

Jones and Calzaretta had five shots apiece to lead the team. Chitwood finished with a goal and two assists.

Carli Calzaretta posted the shutout in goal with two saves.

OUAZ returns to action on Saturday when they host Rocky Mountain College at 7 p.m.
