Jones Hat Trick Leads Spirit to Win at No. 25 Embry-Riddle

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Entering Tuesday's game at No. 25 Embry-Riddle, the OUAZ women's soccer team had been scoreless in three all-time meetings with the Eagles. That streak snapped in the fifth minute and opened a scoring barrage as the Spirit completed the upset with a 5-3 win at Varsity Field.

Saipress Jones notched her first career hat trick in the win, including heading in a corner kick from Haley Howard to open the scoring. After Embry-Riddle (0-1) went in front 2-1 with goals in the 16th and 21st minutes, Jones took a through ball from Andrea Ibarra and slid a shot past the keeper to level the game in the 23rd minute.

The high-scoring first half continued when the Eagles struck for the third time in the 39th minute, only to have Mindy Lertzman sneak a shot just under the crossbar on a counter-attack 82 seconds later to send the game to halftime even at 3-3.

OUAZ (2-1) struck quickly in the second half with the first goal of the season by Cassidi Calzaretta in the 47th minute. Haley Chitwood played a long ball down the right sideline, where Calzaretta collected and put a shot over a leaping keeper. The ball would deflect off the far post and into the back of the keeper and then slowly rolled into the open goal.

Jones completed the seventh hat trick in program history in the 63rd minute by heading in a cross played by Howard.
The Spirit earned the result despite Embry-Riddle holding an 18-13 edge in shots. OUAZ only put eight of the 13 attempts on goal but scored on five of those. The Eagles also had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Chloe Gutierrez made her season debut in goal for the Spirit and notched her 12th career win with seven saves.

OUAZ now gets set to host Wayland Baptist in the home opener on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Spirit Field.
