Spirit Open Campaign with 3-1 Win

CARLSBAD, Calif. – For the first time since 2019, the OUAZ women's soccer team opened a new season with a win after picking up a 3-1 win at Saint Katherine on Thursday afternoon at Aviara Community Park.

OUAZ (1-0) tallied the first goal of the game in the 28th minute as McKenna Payne converted her first OUAZ goal in her first game with the team. Myah Newton picked up the assist on the goal in her collegiate debut.

Saint Katherine (0-1) pulled even in the 32nd minute with a goal from Ceirra Little. However, just 11 seconds later, Paige Murray-Hernandez put the Spirit back in front when she notched her 19th career goal on a feed from Haley Chitwood.

The final strike of the game for the Spirit came on a penalty kick from Anabella Bara in the 79th minute.

OUAZ ended the afternoon with a 22-11 advantage in total shots, with the Spirit putting 10 of those chances on goal. They also took three corner kicks while allowing two.

Carli Calzaretta was the winner in goal with two saves and one goal allowed while playing the first half. Akeala Patterson made three saves after taking over at halftime.

Saipress Jones was credited with five shots (two on goal), with Cassidi Calzaretta taking four. OUAZ used 26 different players in the win.

The Spirit will be off on Friday before facing Trinity Christian on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be played at the Vanguard Soccer Complex in Costa Mesa, Calif.
