Breanna Gonzalez -- May 3, 2022

Game Recap: Softball |

After Early Loss, Spirit Defeat Firestorm to Keep Season Alive

IRVINE, Calif. – The OUAZ softball team is still alive after surviving the first day of the 2022 GSAC Softball Tournament that started on Tuesday at the OC Great Park. OUAZ began the day by falling to Vanguard 6-2, but the Spirit bounced back for a 4-3 win over Arizona Christian in an elimination game.

GAME 1: Vanguard 6, OUAZ 2
Trailing Vanguard 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Mashayla Beltran singled home Breanna Gonzalez to pull the Spirit even with the No. 2 seeded Lions. Vanguard countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a pinch-hit 2-run home run by Mackenzie Hoffman.

OUAZ was able to get back within 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Rachel Stockseth walked, stole second, and came in to score on a pair of wild pitches. The Lions again responded with a walk and back-to-back doubles for another 2-run inning that put the game out of reach.

Gonzalez tallied two of the Spirit's four hits, with Heliana Bueno knocking a double for the team's only extra-base hit.

Phoebe Popplewell (11-8) suffered the loss in the circle. She delivered a complete game with nine hits allowed and four walks. Vanguard scored all six runs with two outs.

GAME 2: OUAZ 4, Arizona Christian 3
The tournament's first elimination game saw the two schools from Arizona put on a thriller. The pitchers dominated early, with neither team breaking through until the fifth-seeded Firestorm got an RBI single from Jyden Miles.

The Spirit answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Bueno walked to start the frame, and then Stockseth reached on a bunt single. Two batters later, Katelyn Chambers delivered a two-run single to left with the bases loaded to give the Spirit the lead. Gonzalez then singled home a run, and Laurynn De Anda added the fourth run with a groundout.

Arizona Christian mounted a 2-out rally in the top of the sixth inning with run-scoring hits from Allie Fryklund and Taylor Fogleman. With the bases loaded, Miles grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat. ACU was then retired in order in the top of the seventh – with the final out being hit to the fence – to extend the Spirit season at least one more day.

In the complete game victory, Alexandra McCutcheon (18-10) gave up just six hits. She recorded five strikeouts and walked four while throwing 120 pitches.

The Spirit offense managed just five hits from five different players.

By staying alive, OUAZ advanced to face Hope International in another elimination game on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play for a trip to the championship round at 4:30 p.m.
