Spirit Shutout Royals Before Tourney Run Ends with Loss to Lions

IRVINE, Calif. – The OUAZ softball team saw its run at the 2022 GSAC Softball Tournament come to an end on Wednesday at the OC Great Park. OUAZ avoided elimination to start the day with a 4-0 win over Hope International, but the nightcap saw Vanguard eliminate the Spirit with a 4-1 win.

OUAZ ends the week with a 34-20 overall record. They will now wait to see if that's enough for an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championship when the 40-team field is announced on Tuesday.

GAME 1: OUAZ 4, Hope International 0
With the season on the line, Alexandra McCutcheon came through with a six-hit shutout in the circle for the Spirit. She held Hope to one hit in nine at-bats with runners on base and 0 for 6 when in scoring position with two strikeouts.

The Spirit offense manufactured the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning. Heliana Bueno came through with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a sacrifice from Rachel Stockseth. Charlene De Anda drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.

Breanna Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead. Another De Anda sacrifice fly and a single from Andraya Rhinehart in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the final scoring plays for the Spirit.

Rhinehart had two of the team's five hits in the win. Gonzalez picked up a single to run her season-long hitting streak to 13 games.

GAME 2: Vanguard 4, OUAZ 1
Kaylie Williams notched the first of her two RBI doubles in the top of the first to give Vanguard a lead they never relinquished. The deficit was 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Stockseth hit a flare to right that was misplayed by the right fielder and allowed Stockseth to get all the way around the bases for the Spirit's only run.

Stockseth finished with two of OUAZ's three hits in the game, with a double from Katelyn Chambers the other. The Spirit was 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and had the leadoff batter of an inning reach just once.

Phoebe Popplewell allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings. Cori Turner went the final two innings, and she allowed a run on two hits.
