Spirit Split in Glendale to Earn No. 3 Seed

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The final day of the regular season saw the OUAZ softball team do what they needed to secure the No. 3 seed for next week's GSAC Softball Tournament. OUAZ lost the first game to Arizona Christian 9-8 before coming back to win the nightcap 4-0.

OUAZ ends the day with a 32-18 overall record, and they finished 13-11 in GSAC play. That tied the Spirit with Hope International for third, but OUAZ receives the No. 3 seed for the tournament by virtue of a 3-1 record against the Royals during the regular season.

GAME 1: Arizona Christian 9, OUAZ 8
The Spirit twice rallied to take the lead from the Firestorm, only to see the home team respond and take the lead back. The first Spirit rally came in the top of the fourth when Madison Collis drove in a run with a single, and then Rachel Stockseth singled home two runs for a 3-2 lead.

ACU tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning to set up a crazy sixth. Two runs scored on a sacrifice and misplay in the field off the bat of Stockseth. Briana Tucker then hit a ball that was caught at the wall for a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Heliana Bueno delivered a two-run pinch-hit single that had OUAZ in front 8-3.

The lead wouldn't hold as ACU scored six times in the bottom of the inning with only one ball leaving the infield. OUAZ walked three batters and committed three errors in the frame to allow the comeback.

Stockseth finished with four RBIs in the game as one of the seven different players to record a hit for the Spirit. Collis and Charlene De Anda each scored a pair of runs.

Phoebe Popplewell took a no-decision after giving up five runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings. Alexandra McCutcheon allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits in 0.2 innings to suffer the loss.

GAME 2: OUAZ 4, Arizona Christian 0
McCutcheon dominated game two in the circle by holding ACU to just four hits in her third shutout of the season. She tallied eight strikeouts – her most in a game since February 28 – while not allowing a runner to reach second base after the second inning.

The Spirit offense didn't get on the board until the fifth inning, when Gonzalez singled home Stockseth with two outs. Tucker made it 2-0 with her fifth home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning. Andraya Rhinehart capped the scoring with a 2-run single with two outs in the sixth.

OUAZ totaled 13 hits as a team, with three apiece from Gonzalez and Stockseth. Tucker added two hits, with eight different players getting at least one.

By earning the No. 3 seed, OUAZ will open the GSAC Tournament against No. 2 seed Vanguard on Tuesday at 1 p.m. The entire double-elimination tournament will be played at the OC Great Park in Irvine, Calif.
