Spirit Split with Warriors

LINCOLN, Calif. – The OUAZ softball team split a doubleheader at William Jessup on Friday evening to start their road trip to northern California. A late rally from the GSAC-leading Warriors earned them a 5-2 win to start the day. OUAZ came back in the nightcap to claim a 7-2 victory.

OUAZ ends the day at 30-16 overall, and they moved into a tie for third place in the conference with an 11-9 record.

GAME 1: William Jessup 5, OUAZ 2
Phoebe Popplewell held William Jessup without a hit until the sixth inning, but the Warriors picked up five hits leading to four runs in the frame to overcome a 2-1 deficit and win the opener.

OUAZ scored on an error in the second inning and went ahead in the sixth with an RBI hit from Breanna Gonzalez. The Spirit had six hits in the game from six different players.

Popplewell allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in a loss.  

GAME 2: OUAZ 7, William Jessup 2
Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in game two to spark the Spirit offense. Heliana Bueno added two hits – both doubles – and two RBIs. Laurynn De Anda had a double for one of her two hits, and Madison Collis delivered a run-scoring triple.

Cori Turner started in the circle and allowed one unearned run on three hits in 3.1 innings. Popplewell allowed one run on one hit over the final 3.2 innings for the win.

The Spirit will close the weekend with a doubleheader at Menlo on Saturday, with game one now slated for 10:30 a.m.
