Softball Sweeps Hope International on Senior Day

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Needing to turn things around after a tough Friday, the OUAZ softball team did just that by sweeping a doubleheader with Hope International on Saturday on the final home day of the season. OUAZ pulled out the day's opener 2-1 in eight innings and then took the finale 8-1.

OUAZ used the two wins on the day they celebrated its seniors to sit at 25-13 overall and 9-7 in the GSAC.

GAME 1: OUAZ 2, Hope International 1
A thrilling pitcher's duel kicked off the day as neither team would score through the seven innings of regulation. After Hope International scored once in their half of the eighth inning, the Spirit responded with two.

Katelyn Chambers would sacrifice the ghost runner of Andraya Rhinehart to third to start the Spirit eighth, and then Mashayla Beltran doubled home the tying run. Charlene De Anda then flew out to left to set up the walk-off single from Laurynn De Anda.

OUAZ had just five hits in the game from five different players. The eighth was the only inning they had more than one hit in an inning. The Spirit entered the eighth inning 0 for 9 with runners on base.

Phoebe Popplewell (8-4) was dominating in the circle for the Spirit, holding the Royals scoreless through seven while striking out six. She was able to work around seven hits and four walks to give the Spirit the chance to win.

GAME 2: OUAZ 8, Hope International 1
Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third, the Spirit scored five in the inning to take control of the game. Briana Tucker started the scoring with a solo home run to left. With singles from Rachel Stockseth and Rhinehart following the homer, Katelyn Chambers knocked in a run with a fourth straight OUAZ hit.

Mashayla Beltran added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1, and then L. De Anda doubled in a run, with C. De Anda adding another RBI single to cap the scoring in the inning.

A Tucker single and an HIU error brought two more runs home in the Spirit sixth inning. Chambers added another RBI single for the game's final run.

The Spirit totaled 11 hits in the game, with two from Chambers and Tucker.

Cori Turner (4-1) held the Royals down in the circle allowing just one run on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Alexandra McCutcheon worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth and then worked a scoreless seventh for her fourth save.

OUAZ will close the regular season with 12 straight road games starting on April 9 at San Diego Christian.
