Spirit Sweep Mustangs for GSAC Tournament Title

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The third-ranked OUAZ men's volleyball team completed the GSAC double by defeating No. 11 The Master's in three sets on Saturday night in the championship match of the GSAC Men's Volleyball Tournament.

OUAZ (24-3) added the tournament crown to its regular season title with the 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 victory.

It took a while for the offense to get started on Saturday as the Spirit committed seven hitting errors with a .242 attack percentage in the first set. They got things going in the second set and went the rest of the match with only four errors. That helped the team to a .333 attack percentage at the end of the night.

The Master's (13-11) kept pace in total kills as OUAZ finished with just a 38-37 edge, but the Spirit pulled away by forcing the Mustangs into 19 hitting errors and .189 hitting by totaling 10 blocks and 31 digs. After hitting .321 in the tightly contested first set, TMU hit .156 and .114 in sets two and three, respectively.

Jordan Moses and Emery Outin had 10 kills apiece to lead the Spirit. Quaid King added seven kills, with Colin Donisthorpe finishing with six.

OUAZ also gained an advantage in the match with eight service aces. Entering the match with two aces all season, Jonathan Igo recorded four aces on Saturday – including three straight in the second set – to lead the Spirit.

John Estrada anchored the Spirit defense with a career-high 16 digs while Tyler Gardenhire distributed 35 assists. Donisthorpe added to his block record with five blocks, and Brenden Hardt added four blocks.

Ben Herb led the Mustangs with 13 kills.

The win secures an automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Volleyball National Championship in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 12-16. The Spirit will learn their pool assignment on Monday during the National Championship Qualifier Reveal on the NAIA Facebook page at 2 p.m.
