Game Recap: Softball |

Spirit Take Three from Mariners

COMPTON, Calif. – The OUAZ softball team closed out non-conference play by taking three of four games against Marymount California on Tuesday and Wednesday at the MLB Youth Academy. After dropping the opener on Tuesday 1-0, OUAZ won the next two games 2-1. The Spirit then claimed the series finale 5-2.

OUAZ ends the series with a 29-15 overall record and eight days off.

TUESDAY GAME 1: Marymount 1, OUAZ 0
A run by the Mariners in the bottom of the first was all either team would manage as pitching dominated the game. OUAZ had just singles from Mashayla Beltran and Breanna Gonzalez and had just one runner reach second base.

Alexandra McCutcheon held the Mariners to one run on six hits with six strikeouts.

TUESDAY GAME 2: OUAZ 2, Marymount 1
In another pitcher's duel that was tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the seventh, Briana Tucker delivered a solo home run with one out in the inning to give the Spirit a 2-1 win.

The home was one of four hits in the game for the Spirit, with the team getting triples from Katelyn Chambers and Gonzalez, along with a single from Angelina Mercado. OUAZ was 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Phoebe Popplewell shut down the Marymount offense with just four hits allowed and a single run. She stranded seven runners on base in throwing a complete game.

WEDNESDAY GAME 1: OUAZ 2, Marymount 1
In a game eerily similar to the nightcap on Tuesday, Tucker broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to help the Spirit to a 2-1 win. Gonzalez drove in the team's first run with a single in the top of the first.

Mercado had two of the team's five hits, with all of them being singles.

Popplewell continued her solid series with another complete game and just two hits allowed.

WEDNESDAY GAME 2: OUAZ 5, Marymount 2
A two-run fourth inning that featured an RBI double from Beltran gave the Spirit the lead. They added on three in the fifth, with two coming on a triple from Rachel Stockseth to complete the series win.

Beltran had two hits while Alex Gill contributed a double towards the Spirit's seven total hits in the game. Gonzalez and Mercado each added singles to their solid series at the plate.

McCutcheon went the distance in the circle allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.

After taking the rest of the week off for Easter, the Spirit will head to northern California next weekend for a pair of GSAC doubleheaders. That trip begins in Rocklin on April 22 at 2 p.m.
