Softball Bats Quiet against Vanguard

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team struggled at the plate in a pair of losses to Vanguard on Friday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference action. Vanguard swept a doubleheader, winning game one 3-0 and game two 10-2.

OUAZ ends the day at 23-13 overall and 7-7 in conference games.

GAME 1: Vanguard 3, OUAZ 0
Vanguard scored twice in the first and added another in the third, and that was enough as they shutout the Spirit in the opener. OUAZ had just two hits in the game, singles from Katelyn Chambers and Karlene Chavarria, and only one got a runner to second base.

Alexandra McCutcheon allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in three innings. Phoebe Popplewell worked four scoreless innings of relief.

GAME 2: Vanguard 10, OUAZ 2
The OUAZ bats were quiet once again, with just five hits and never more than one in an inning. Trailing 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Briana Tucker homered to get the Spirit on the board. Angelina Mercado added a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth.

Andraya Rhinehart had two of the Spirit hits and also drew a walk. Breanna Gonzalez picked up the fifth hit.

McCutcheon suffered the game two loss after giving up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings.

OUAZ will have a quick turnaround as they host Hope International on Saturday at noon in the final home games of the season.
