Softball Swept in GSAC Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The opening doubleheader of the GSAC season for the OUAZ softball team saw the Spirit drop both games to Arizona Christian on Wednesday evening. After coming back multiple times to force extra innings in the opener, the Spirit eventually fell 9-8 in nine innings. Arizona Christian used a seven-run third inning to lead to a 12-4 win in the second game.

With the two losses, OUAZ falls to 14-8 overall and 0-2 in the GSAC.

GAME 1: Arizona Christian 9, OUAZ 8 (9 innings)
OUAZ rallied three times to tie the Firestorm and eventually send the game into extra innings, but the Spirit could never go ahead, and ACU took the opener. Trailing 3-0 in the third, Samantha Miller and Andraya Rhinehart had RBI hits to get the Spirit within one. Laurynn De Anda tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

ACU would score twice in their half of the fifth; only two see Breanna Gonzalez deliver a 2-run double to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. OUAZ trailed again in the bottom of the seventh, 7-6 when Madison Collis homered to left to tie the game again.

After neither team scored in the eighth, the Firestorm plated two in the top of the ninth. OUAZ got one back on a wild pitch and had runners at second and third with nobody out, but they could not add another run.

De Anda finished 2 for 4 with a double, homer, and two runs scored. Gonzalez had two RBI, and Collis scored two runs.

GAME 2: Arizona Christian 12, OUAZ 4 (5 innings)
Rhinehart hit a 2-run home run in the Spirit first to put them ahead 2-1, but ACU struck for seven runs in the top of the third and never looked back. The Firestorm forced the run-rule with three more runs in the top of the fifth.

De Anda hit a solo homer in the Spirit third, and Miller drove in a run with a single in the fourth, but that was it for the Spirit.

OUAZ will look to bounce back on Friday when they host San Diego Christian in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
