Softball Sweeps Hawks

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of San Diego Christian in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon. OUAZ walked off the opener 2-1 and won the nightcap 5-1.

OUAZ ends the day 16-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

GAME 1: OUAZ 2, San Diego Christian 1
In one of the best pitched games of the season, OUAZ found the critical hits when they needed them to earn the win. Neither team recorded a hit until the fifth inning when San Diego Christian used a double and two sacrifices to take a 1-0 lead.

The Spirit's first hit came in the sixth. After Angelina Mercado reached on an error, Colby Johnson pinch ran and stole second. Katelyn Chambers then singled to left to score Johnson to tie the game at 1-1. The Hawks threatened in the top of the seventh, but Laurynn De Anda threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning.

De Anda then singles to start the bottom of the seventh and scored two batters later on a walk-off single from Mashayla Beltran.  

Alexandra McCutcheon was the winner in the circle, with four strikeouts and four hits allowed while throwing a complete game.

GAME 2: OUAZ 5, San Diego Christian 1
Beltran delivered the crucial hit in the second game with a 2-run single in the fifth inning that opened a 4-1 lead for the Spirit. Andraya Rhinehart and Charlene De Anda also knocked in runs in the win.

OUAZ had seven hits from seven different players.

Phoebe Popplewell went 4.1 innings with one run (zero earned) allowed on three hits. McCutcheon went the rest of the way, allowing one hit to earn her 10th win of the season.

OUAZ will be back in action on Monday morning at a new time, 9 a.m., when they host Dickinson State.
