Softball Sweeps Blue Hawks in Home Doubleheader

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The home field success continued on Monday morning for the OUAZ softball team as the Spirit swept a doubleheader with Dickinson State. OUAZ won both games by run-rule in five innings after winning the first 10-2 and then claiming the second 8-0.

OUAZ ends the day 18-8 on the season and 10-4 at home. The 18 wins are a new single-season program record.

GAME 1: OUAZ 10, Dickinson State 2
The Spirit scored three times in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Laurynn De Anda and a 2-run single from Mashayla Beltran. In the fourth inning, the duo struck again with a 2-run single from De Anda and an RBI double by Beltran.

The lead was 6-2 in the fifth when Breanna Gonzalez hit her second home run of the season to left. After Colby Johnson and Andraya Rhinehart drove in runs, De Anda delivered the walk-off with a single to center.

De Anda finished with four RBIs in a game for the second time this season as she went 2 of 3 at the plate. Beltran was 3 of 3 with a season-high three RBIs. Rhinehart had two hits – including a double – and she scored three times.

As a team, the Spirit totaled 11 hits from seven different players. They tied the program record with six stolen bases.

Alexandra McCutcheon (11-3) won her third straight decision after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with six strikeouts.

GAME 2: OUAZ 8, Dickinson State 0
The offense from the first game continued into the second, with Rhinehart knocking in the first run with a single in the first inning. OUAZ scored three times in the second inning, getting two on a single from Katelyn Chambers.

Two runs scored in a single from Beltran in the fifth inning, and then she scored on a double from Charlene De Anda. Gonzalez ended the day with a walk-off single.

Gonzalez finished 3 for 3 with a double and RBI. Samantha Miller and Rhinehart added two hits apiece. The Spirit had 11 hits as a team.

While the offense was building its advantage, Phoebe Popplewell (4-4) dominated in the circle. She held Dickinson State to just one hit – a leadoff single in the fourth inning – and had two strikeouts in recording her first career shutout.

OUAZ will now travel to California, where they will play at Hope International on Friday in a rematch of the 2021 GSAC Championship Series.
