Weekend Begins with Split at Hope International

FULLERTON, Calif. – Playing outside of Arizona for the first time this season, the OUAZ softball team split a GSAC doubleheader at Hope International on Friday afternoon. The first game of the day went to Hope International 2-1 in nine innings before OUAZ came back to win game two, 1-0.

The Spirit ends the day with a 19-9 overall record and 3-3 in GSAC play.

GAME 1: Hope International 2, OUAZ 1 (9 innings)
Game one featured two of the top pitchers in the GSAC displaying why that is the case. Each team had just three hits, and they combined for 20 strikeouts.

OUAZ took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Laurynn De Anda. Hope International tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Caitlyn Felina doubled to start the bottom of the ninth to score the ghost runner from second and win the game for the Royals.

Alexandra McCutcheon (11-4) suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs (one earned) in eight innings. She allowed three hits and tallied seven strikeouts. McCutcheon retired 11 straight HIU batters at one point and held them to 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

De Anda had two of the Spirit's three hits, with Katelyn Chambers picking up the third.

GAME 2: OUAZ 1, Hope International 0
In game two, Phoebe Popplewell (5-4) delivered a three-hit shutout for the Spirit to notch a shutout victory for the second straight start. After stranding runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth, Popplewell closed the game by retiring the final seven batters she faced.

OUAZ scored the game's only run in the fourth inning as L. De Anda started the frame with a double, and then Charlene De Anda drove her in with a double two batters later.

The Spirit had just five hits in the win.

OUAZ closes its weekend trip on Saturday in Costa Mesa, where they face No. 22 Vanguard.
