Popplewell Dominates as Spirit Split with No. 22 Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The OUAZ softball team split its fourth straight GSAC doubleheader on Saturday at No. 22 Vanguard. OUAZ dominated in the circle to win game one 1-0 before Vanguard responded with a 10-0 win in game two.

OUAZ leaves its weekend in California with a 20-10 overall record and 4-4 in the GSAC.

GAME 1: OUAZ 1, Vanguard 0
Phoebe Popplewell (6-4) continued her recent streak of success by holding Vanguard scoreless over 4.2 innings to start the same. Alexandra McCutcheon pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing only one hit for her second save.

The Spirit had just three hits at the plate, with two coming in the third inning. Rachel Stockseth led off the inning with a third and then stole second. After reaching third on a sacrifice from Madison Collis, Stockseth scored on a single from Andraya Rhinehart.

Popplewell didn't allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, and then she stranded Lions on second and third to end the inning. Vanguard also had runners on second and third in the sixth but didn't score off McCutcheon.

McCutcheon allowed five runs on six hits in three innings. Cori Turner allowed five runs in one inning.
