Walkoff Highlights Sweep of Oaks

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The home field success continued for the OUAZ softball team as they swept a doubleheader with Menlo on Friday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The Spirit won the first game 5-3 and then walked off game two 5-4 in eight innings.

The two wins move OUAZ to 22-10 overall and into second place in the GSAC at 6-4.

GAME 1: OUAZ 5, Menlo 3
Four players had two hits as the Spirit totaled 10 as a team in winning the day's opener. Consecutive two-out doubles from Breanna Gonzalez and Heliana Bueno gave the Spirit a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Menlo got one back in its half of the third inning before an RBI double from Rachel Stockseth pushed the Spirit lead to 3-1. Mashayla Beltran and Samantha Miller added RBIs in the fifth inning.

Miller and Bueno joined Andraya Rhinehart and Laurynn De Anda with two hits in the game. One of De Anda's hits was a double to give the team four doubles total.

Alexandra McCutcheon pitched a complete game to earn the win.

GAME 2: OUAZ 5, Menlo 4
Menlo scored twice in the top of the first only to see the Spirit get three in the bottom of the second. Briana Tucker and Stockseth each had RBI hits in the inning. Tied at 4-4 after seven, OUAZ held Menlo scoreless in the top of the eighth, and then Gonzalez drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

De Anda and Miller had two hits apiece in the win as the Spirit totaled seven as a team.

McCutcheon worked the final six innings in relief and allowed two runs on seven hits to secure her second win of the day.

OUAZ returns to action on Saturday when they host No. 23 William Jessup in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
