Game 1 Rally Leads to Split with No. 23 Warriors

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Facing the team sitting atop the GSAC standings with just one conference loss entering the day, the OUAZ softball team rallied to win game one with No. 23 William Jessup to earn a split of the day's doubleheader.

GAME 1: OUAZ 7, William Jessup 6
OUAZ took advantage of a misplayed ball in right to score three runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning and open a 3-0 advantage. William Jessup would homer twice during a six-run fourth inning, giving the Warriors a 6-3 lead.

With the momentum against them, the Spirit turned things around with two runs in their half of the fourth to trim the deficit to 6-5. Madison Collis and Andraya Rhinehart had RBI singles in the inning to get the Spirit back in the game.

OUAZ tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an error from the Jessup catcher when she dropped the ball trying to apply a tag on a play at the plate. Rhinehart then drove in the eventual winning run with a ground out in the next at-bat.

Alexandra McCutcheon worked around a one-out single in the top of the seventh to notch her third save and give the Spirit its third win over a ranked opponent this season.

Rhinehart, Collis, and Katelyn Chambers had two hits apiece in the win as the team finished with seven overall. Gonzalez had a triple for the Spirit's lone extra-base hit.

Phoebe Popplewell had just the one tough inning but picked up the win with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

GAME 2: William Jessup 9, OUAZ 0
In the first and second innings, William Jessup scored single runs before putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the third inning. The Warriors tallied three doubles and two homers in the game with nine hits overall.

A one-out single from Briana Tucker in the third inning was the only hit in the game by the Spirit, and she was erased in a double-play from the next batter.

McCutcheon suffered the loss by allowing nine runs on eight hits in three innings. Cori Turner worked two scoreless innings with just one hit allowed.

OUAZ ends the day at 23-11 overall and in a four-way tie for second place in the GSAC standings at 7-5 halfway through the conference schedule. The Spirit is home for the final two days this season next weekend, starting against Vanguard on Friday at 2 p.m.
