OUAZ Drops Two on Final Day at Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team lost both games it played on Saturday in its final day at the Tucson Invitational. The day began with a 3-2 loss against Aquinas and ended with No. 9 Olivet Nazarene defeating the Spirit 7-3.

OUAZ ends the event with a 4-4 record to sit at 14-6 overall on the season.

GAME 1: Aquinas 3, OUAZ 2
OUAZ took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a fielding error only to see Aquinas go ahead in the bottom of the inning with a 2-run home run. A Madison Collis RBI groundout tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Saints walked off winners with a 2-out single in the bottom of the seventh.

Andraya Rhinehart and Katelyn Chambers each went 2 for 3 in the game. Rhinehart added a double and a stolen base.

Phoebe Popplewell allowed two runs in 4.2 innings, and Alexandra McCutcheon suffered the loss allowing one run in 2.0 innings.

GAME 2: Olivet Nazarene 7, OUAZ 3
Each team scored a run in the second inning, but Olivet Nazarene would slowly build its advantage with single runs in the top of the third and fifth innings. The Tigers added four runs in the top of the seventh. OUAZ countered with two in the bottom of the inning before stranding runners on the corners to end the game.

The Spirit had 12 hits in the loss, with Rhinehart, Mashayla Beltran, and Charlene DeAnda getting three each. De Anda and Beltran each knocked in a run, as did Breanna Gonzalez.

McCutcheon took her second loss of the day after allowing three runs (two earned) in five innings. Cori Turner worked the final two innings in the circle, and she allowed four runs (zero earned) on five hits.

OUAZ now gets set for GSAC play with a pair of home series next week. They begin by hosting Arizona Christian in a doubleheader Wednesday.
