Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 6 Spirit Continue Streak with 3-1 Win over No.1 Vanguard

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After getting over a first set when nothing seemed to go right, the No. 6 OUAZ men's volleyball turned things around and won the following three sets to upset No. 1 Vanguard on Saturday afternoon at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (15-1, 5-0 GSAC) moved into first-place atop the GSAC standings with the 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 victory. The Spirit has now won a program-record 11 straight matches.

Knocking off the No. 1 team in the country seemed nearly impossible after the first set that saw OUAZ total just 10 kills with six errors while Vanguard (9-4, 4-1) hit .600 with 13 kills. The Spirit turned things around in the second set with 15 kills and holding the Lions to just eight kills and .059 hitting.

With the match now even, OUAZ turned its offense up another level in the third and fourth sets. They overcame .423 hitting and 14 kills from Vanguard in the third by posting 18 kills on .467 hitting themselves. The Spirit then closed out the win by hitting .423 with 13 kills in the fourth set.

All that led to OUAZ holding a 56-48 advantage in kills overall while hitting .322 to the .306 of the Lions. The Spirit created a slight separation with four service aces while only getting aced one time.

Emery Outin finished with a match-high 17 kills on a day he hit .467 with six digs. The 17 kills tied his career-high set earlier this season, and this is his seventh match this season with 10-plus kills.

Jordan Moses overcame a slow start to notch a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Quaid King added six kills and six digs.

OUAZ got a spark off the bench from Conner Duyck and Tyler Gardenhire. Duyck continued seven kills and two blocks while Gardenhire led recorded 40 assists.

Vanguard had two players reach double figures in kills, with Matthew Roussin leading the Lions with 15 kills.

The Spirit will continue their six-match homestand on Wednesday when they host Arizona Christian at 6 p.m.
