Spirit Knock Off Redhawks in Home Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing in front of the home crowd at Faith Arena for the first time this season, the 12th-ranked OUAZ men's volleyball team rode the energy to a 3-1 win over No. 6 Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday night.

OUAZ (8-1) used the 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13 win to record the program's first-ever win against Benedictine Mesa (2-5). Entering the night, the Spirit had only won four sets in seven previous meetings in the series.

The high-powered offensive attack of the Spirit was on full display as they totaled 58 kills on .362 hitting. That attack percentage got better as the night went along and concluded with the team hitting .609 in the fourth set to close out the win.

Jordan Moses was the catalyst for the OUAZ attack with a career-high 21 kills – tied for fourth-most in program history – on .447 hitting. It was the third 20-kills match of his career and came with five digs and two blocks.

Emery Outin added 12 kills while hitting .417 with six digs and two service aces. Quaid King finished with seven kills, including four in the fourth set.

While the offense was on display, the Spirit defense also played a factor in holding the Redhawks to 46 kills at .186 hitting. BenU needed 18 kills and .516 hitting to earn its third set victory as they hit .100 or lower in each of the other three sets.

The Spirit had eight blocks, with Nicho Calles and Colin Donisthorpe leading the team with three each. Calles recorded 37 assists, and Tatum Gray had a team-best nine digs.

It's a quick turnaround for the Spirit as they are back at Faith Arena on Wednesday night to host Park Gilbert at 6 p.m.
