McCutcheon Ties Strikeout Record as Softball Splits with Firebirds

SURPRISE, Ariz. – It was a day of dominating pitching performances on Saturday as OUAZ and Saint Katherine split a doubleheader at Willow Canyon High School. OUAZ (4-2) took the opener 5-0 before Saint Katherine (1-3) got the second game 3-0.

Alexandra McCutcheon continued her hot start to the season with the complete game shutout in game one. She tied the program record with 13 strikeouts – recording at least two in every inning but the third – by getting the final two batters of the game. McCutcheon allowed just two hits and had zero walks.

OUAZ needed McCutcheon's performance as they couldn't get anything going themselves until the fifth inning. Heliana Bueno delivered the critical blow with a two-run double to open the scoring. Katelyn Chambers and Andraya Rhinehart then added RBI singles for a four-run inning. In the sixth inning, Rachel Stockseth had the final blow with an opposite field home run.

The Spirit totaled seven hits in the win, with Rhinehart picking up two of them.

In the second game, Saint Katherine's Breanna Villarreal and the Firebirds defense responded. After Samantha Miller opened the bottom of the first with a single, Villarreal retired the next 19 batters she faced before walking Rhinehart with two outs in the seventh. However, Laurynn De Anda grounded out next to end the game.

In addition to solid pitching, USK made several stellar plays in the field, taking away potential Spirit hits.

Cori Turner (0-1) allowed just two runs (one earned) on six hits in four innings in defeat. Phoebe Popplewell allowed just a solo home run in her three innings while striking out four.

OUAZ will play a pair of in-state road games next weekend, starting on Friday at Park Gilbert.
