Softball Sweeps Two at Park Gilbert

GILBERT, Ariz. – It was another solid offensive effort from the OUAZ softball team on Friday as they swept a doubleheader with Park Gilbert at the Cactus Yards. OUAZ (6-2) won the first game 10-4 before taking game two, 10-7.

Game one saw a barrage of runs in the first inning and a half, with the Spirit striking for five in the top of the first only to see Park Gilbert score four times in the bottom of the inning. OUAZ would then put up four runs in the top of the second before the pitching staff of each side settled in.

Helian Bueno had a pair of doubles and three RBI in the first game, and she was one of four players to record two hits as the team totaled 11 hits. Breanna Gonzalez delivered two hits, a double, and two RBI, with Charlene also adding a two-run double.

After allowing the four runs in the first inning, Alexandra McCutcheon (4-0) held the Buccaneers scoreless the rest of the game with five strikeouts to earn the win.

Game two saw the Spirit again score in bunches with three runs in the third inning and five more in the sixth. The latter was needed after Park had tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Briana Tucker put the Spirit back in front with a sacrifice fly in the sixth before a run-scoring single by Charlene De Anda and an RBI double by Mashayla Beltran. Katelyn Chambers then singled home a run before Laurynn De Anda did the same to cap the Spirit scoring in the inning.

Chambers totaled three hits in the game – including an inside-the-park home run – with two RBI. Samantha Miller also had three hits. C. De Anda finished with four runs batted in.

Phoebe Popplewell (2-1) picked up the win with five innings of work. Cori Turner went the final two innings and allowed two unearned runs.

The Spirit will be back in action on Saturday when they play a doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa at noon at Seton Catholic Prep.
