OUAZ Sweeps Doubleheader at Benedictine Mesa

MESA, Ariz. – The hot start to the season for the OUAZ softball team continued on Saturday as the Spirit swept a doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa at Seton Catholic Prep. OUAZ took the first game 6-0 before completing the sweep with a 5-2 win.

Neither team generated any offense through the first five innings of game one. That changed in the top of the sixth as OUAZ saw seven players reach base as they scored six runs to blow the game open. Samantha Miller and Katelyn Chambers had run-scoring hits in the frame for the Spirit.

Chambers would finish the game with three hits – including a triple – and two RBI. Mashayla Beltran added two hits.

Alexandra McCutcheon (5-0) won her fifth consecutive start by throwing six innings and allowing no runs with eight strikeouts. Cori Turner worked a perfect seventh.

Game two saw Benedictine Mesa take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Redhawks wouldn't score the rest of the game. Angelina Mercado drove in the Spirit's first run with a single in the second inning, and then Miller drove in three to put the Spirit in front in the fourth. Beltran knocked in the final run in the seventh inning.

Mercado and Laurynn De Anda each had two hits in the second game.

Turner earned her first win of the season with 4.1 innings pitched and two runs allowed. Phoebe Popplewell worked 2.2 innings allowing no hits with one walk and one strikeout for the save.

OUAZ and BenU will meet again on Wednesday at Willow Canyon High School.
