Spirit Sweep Doubleheader with Buccaneers

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Entering its doubleheader with Park Gilbert on Friday afternoon, the OUAZ softball team had recorded just three run-rule wins in the program's history. The Spirit made that five behind a 13-1 win in a five-inning game one and a 10-1 win in a six-inning game two.

OUAZ (3-1) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first of game one before quickly responding with two runs of their own in the bottom half on an RBI double from Andraya Rhinehart and Laurynn De Anda. The Spirit then tied the program record for runs in an inning by crossing the plate six times in the bottom of the third. They then put a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth to extend the margin.

Alexandra McCutcheon (2-0) was the benefactor of the scoring outburst. She threw her second complete game in as many starts, allowing just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Samantha Miller drove in four runs, including three on a bases-clearing double that saw her advance to third on a throw and score on an error, during a 2 for 4 outing at the plate. Rhinehart also had two hits and two RBI to match the two RBI from both Heliana Bueno and Breanna Gonzalez.

The Spirit offense continued to roll in game two with an RBI double from De Anda and a run-scoring single from Gonzalez in the bottom of the first. De Anda knocked in another run with a single in the fourth inning, and then she ended the game with a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth.

De Anda finished the game a triple short of the cycle with three runs scored and four driven in. Gonzalez added a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning to give her four RBI in the game.

During the second game, Phoebe Popplewell (1-1) dominated in the circle with just one unearned run allowed on seven hits and six strikeouts.

OUAZ is back in action on Saturday as they host a doubleheader against Saint Katherine starting at noon at Willow Canyon High School.
