Women's Basketball Set for Postseason Debut

THIS WEEK
On Wednesday, the OUAZ women's basketball team will make its first-ever postseason appearance when they face San Diego Christian in the first round of the 2022 GSAC Women's Basketball Tournament. 

The tournament's first game will tipoff at 6 p.m. (AZ) between the No. 9 seed Spirit and No. 8 seed Hawks. The winner advances to a quarterfinal game with No. 1 seed Westmont on Thursday at 6 p.m. (AZ). All of the games will be played at The MacArthur Center on The Master's University campus in Santa Clarita, California.

Every game of the GSAC Tournament will be broadcast live on the GSAC Sports Network. The GSAC Sports Network is available on your computer or mobile device at OUAZSpirit.com/watch. You can download the GSAC Network app on all Amazon Fire, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku devices.

STORYLINES
OUAZ enters the tournament with a 6-20 overall record and looking to snap a four-game losing streak. They went 3-15 in conference play to finish ninth in the standings.

San Diego Christian swept the two games against the Spirit this season, and the Hawks have now won four straight in the series. Wednesday will be the first time the two teams have played on a neutral court.

The Spirit averages 53.7 points per game while shooting 31.7 percent from the field. They make 26.1 percent from beyond the arc, averaging 4.8 threes per contest.

OUAZ ranks third in the GSAC by attempting 17.6 free throws per game, and they are fourth in the conference by averaging 3.0 blocks per game.

ABOUT THE SPIRIT
Makayla Holthaus led the Spirit in scoring during the regular season with 202 points for an average of 9.2 points per game. She scored in double figures 12 times – including in seven of the last 10 games – with a career-high 21 points against The Master's on December 2. Holthaus also leads the team with 13 blocked shots.

Marlee Johnson has scored 165 points by posting 7.5 points per game. She has scored in double figures six times with a pair of 20-point outings. Johnson is the OUAZ leader with 114 rebounds and 44 assists.

Cierra Kiser averages 6.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She tied Johnson for the team lead with 144 rebounds with 10-plus rebounds in a game three times. Kiser had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds at Life Pacific on February 3.

Virginia Edmondson has come on of late for the Spirit by scoring in double figures three times in the past six games. That run has raised her average to 5.1 points per game while leading the team with 28 steals.
