Rally Falls Short at ACU

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Trailing by 29 in the second quarter, the OUAZ women's basketball team fought back within five before falling at Arizona Christian 80-73 on Thursday night in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

OUAZ (5-7, 1-4 GSAC) struggled to make anything happen at either end of the floor in the first 16 minutes and allowed Arizona Christian (4-6, 2-3) to build a 45-16 lead midway through the second quarter. The Spirit then closed the half with an 18-6 run to get within 17 by halftime.

After an even third quarter, OUAZ used a 14-2 burst in the fourth quarter to get within 72-66 with 1:14 remaining. They eventually trimmed the deficit to five in the final seconds, but the Firestorm hit all eight attempts at the foul line in the final minute to hold off the rally.

OUAZ finished the night shooting 36.0 percent from the field with 16 points from 21 offensive rebounds. They held ACU to 36.1 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers with five steals.

Marlee Johnson led the Spirit with 19 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Landyn Lovelady and Tiana Sledge added 14 points apiece. Sledge had a team-best 12 rebounds and three assists.

Lauren Gunn led the Firestorm with 30 points.

The Spirit will close out 2022 with a home game against 21st-ranked Montana Western on December 17.
