Tough First Half Leads to Home Loss

SURPRISE, Ariz. – A tough shooting day and a slow start led to the OUAZ women's basketball team falling to Hope International 62-46 on Saturday afternoon at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (5-6, 1-3 GSAC) had just nine points in each of the first two quarters, and the Spirit shot 31.1 percent for the game in defeat. Hope International (9-1, 4-0) led 39-18 at halftime and finished the game with 16 fast break points.

After falling behind 45-18 with 7:44 to play in the third quarter, the Spirit went on a 19-2 run to get within 10 with just under one minute to play in the quarter. The Royals erased any thought of a Spirit comeback with nine straight points to begin the fourth quarter.

Tiana Sledge led OUAZ with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year. Melissa Simmons added 12 points off the bench by making 4 of 6 from beyond the arc.

OUAZ had a 45-44 edge in rebounds with 11 offensive boards. They were hurt by the 30 points in the paint and 25 points off turnovers scored by the Royals.

Hope got 21 points and 11 rebounds from Shiane Talley and another 20 points, and 11 boards from Jeanette Fine.

The Spirit return to action on Thursday when they travel to Glendale to face Arizona Christian at 5:30 p.m.
