Spirit Survives in Overtime after Giving Up Big Lead

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Leading by 24 with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter, the OUAZ women's basketball team survived a comeback from San Diego Christian to claim a 78-72 overtime win on Thursday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (5-5, 1-2 GSAC) led 20-7 after the first quarter and seemed to be headed to an easy victory in the first home conference game of the season. They had the lead at 52-28 with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter when San Diego Christian (2-7, 0-3) began to rally.

The Hawks outscored the Spirit 35-11 over the next 12 minutes to tie the game. The visitors took their first lead of the game with 29 seconds to play in regulation on a three from Mamaeia Makoni. Cierra Kiser would split a pair of free throws with 10.9 seconds, forcing the game into overtime.

The Spirit opened the extra period with an 8-2 run behind back-to-back buckets from Tatiana Gary to get it started. After SDCC scored four straight to get back within two, Marlee Johnson hit a jumper and then a pair of free throws to seal the win.

OUAZ could not put the game away at the line in regulation by converting just 3 of 8 freebies in the final two minutes. They finished the game going 15 of 23 from the line while also shooting 43.1 percent from the field. The Spirit scored 30 points from 28 SDCC turnovers.

Johnson led all players with 21 points on 8 of 17 shooting. She added seven rebounds and three steals to her season-high scoring effort. Gary added 15 points, while Kiser finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

San Diego Christian shot 40.6 percent and had a 48-39 rebounding advantage. They scored 20 points from 19 offensive rebounds.

Elaina Martinez led four Hawks in double figures with 14 points.

The Spirit will return to action on Saturday at noon when they host Hope International.
