No. 22 Spirit Defeat Wayland Baptist 38-14 to Complete Home Season

SURPRISE, Ariz. – With its 38-14 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday night at Spirit Field, the 22nd-ranked OUAZ football completed the home slate of games with a perfect 4-0 record.

OUAZ (6-2, 6-2 SAC) kept its conference title hopes alive, and the Spirit can clinch at least a share of the crown with a win at Panhandle State on Saturday.

It was another fast start for the Spirit as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. They went 55 yards in eight plays – capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Isaiah Randalle to Jeremiah Wright – on their first possession of the game.

Trey Overton extended the lead to 14-0 when he returned an interception seven yards for a score. Kristopher Ewens closed the opening quarter scoring with an 8-yard TD reception to end a 75-yard scoring drive.

Wayland Baptist (2-7, 2-6) scored its first points at the 6:10 mark of the second quarter. That snapped a streak without allowing points at home by the OUAZ defense of 97 minutes and 46 seconds. The run went back to the fourth quarter of the game against Louisiana Christian on September 24.

After Landon Reeves connected on a 31-yard field goal for the only points of the third quarter, Marcelous Chester-Riley had a 28-yard rushing touchdown and a 42-yard receiving touchdown to complete the scoring by the Spirit.

OUAZ finished with 360 yards of offense and 20 first downs. They converted 7 of 17 on third down and 2 of 3 on fourth down.

Randalle completed 21 of 40 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. He completed passes to eight different receivers, with six making multiple grabs. Devone Humphrey led the team with seven catches for 117 yards.

Chester-Riley helped the Spirit run for 112 yards with 85 yards on 14 carries. He also had 47 receiving yards. Ewens gained 46 yards on 13 carries.

The Spirit defense held WBU to 221 yards and only 95 yards passing. The Pioneers finished 3 of 14 on third down and punted eight times with two turnovers. They only reached OUAZ territory on three of their 14 drives.

Khalil Lewis led OUAZ with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss. Brandon Tomerlin Jr. recorded seven tackles and one sack. Christopher Scott had the team's other sack as part of his five tackles. Eric Holman snagged his fourth interception of the season.

The final game of the regular season will kickoff from Goodwell, Okla., at 1 p.m. AZT on November 12.
